The Terrapins came out of their first road game of the season with a shaky win over the Cavaliers on Saturday night.
After an unexpected and disappointing loss against Michigan State last week, the Terrapins knew the importance of a win against Virginia to maintain momentum for the rest of the season. A sloppy first half drew concern, as Virginia led 13-7 into halftime. Maryland was flagged for four penalties in the first quarter alone, continuing a trend from last week. Maryland offensive lineman Andre Roye Jr. induced the most costly penalty of the night for the Terps, as he was called for encroachment in the second quarter. Maryland was set to go for it on fourth-and-1 but was forced to punt.
Virginia started the game with two field goals in the first and second quarters. Maryland answered in the second with a Tai Felton touchdown, though the Cavaliers quickly responded with a 10-yard scramble touchdown by quarterback Anthony Colandrea.
Maryland found their stride by the second half, shutting down Virginia’s offense and picking up 20 more points on a pair of touchdowns and a pair of field goals. Terrapins quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. led the offense, throwing for 263 yards tonight with two passing touchdowns and a rushing score. Receiver Tai Felton has also recorded a touchdown in three straight games, becoming the first Maryland receiver with 100+ receiving yards in the first three games of a season.
The Terrapins are back home next Saturday for a Family Weekend matchup against Villanova.
