The Terrapins gained their first conference victory through a 28-29 win over USC on Saturday night.
Despite being down by 14, Maryland made a fourth-quarter surge to sneak ahead of USC late in the game. The Trojans were seven-point road favorites heading into College Park, and a win was expected against a struggling Terrapin team. Southern California pulled ahead quickly and intensely, leading 21-7 going into the half.
A glimmer of hope shone for the Terps in the third quarter when the Trojan’s quarterback Miller Moss threw an interception to Maryland’s Lavain Scruggs, who returned the ball for 51 yards. The Terrapins capitalized on the next drive with a Tai Felton touchdown, bringing the score to 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Trojans struck early in the fourth quarter with a touchdown by receiver Duce Robinson, which prompted the Terps rally. Roman Hemby carried for a 10-yard touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion by Kaden Prather, a key scoring move that resulted in Maryland’s eventual victory.
One of the game’s most important plays included a blocked field goal attempt with two minutes left in the fourth, which would have locked the game down for USC. Instead, with 53 seconds left, Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was able to pull through with a go-ahead 3-yard touchdown, bringing the score to a final of 28-29.
This was a changed Terrapin team from what we saw last week against Northwestern. Billy Edwards Jr. had a career-high of 373 yards, with Maryland’s offense putting up a combined 429 yards. The Terps pulled off their largest fourth-quarter comeback win since 2020, as fans concluded the night by rushing the field to close out a pleasantly surprising Homecoming Weekend.
The Terrapins hope to build a winning streak next Saturday on the road against Minnesota.
