The Baltimore Ravens open up their 2024-25 campaign with a tough lost on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs 20-27. Check out the Offensive Gradebook: (Ravens Week 1 Gradebook: Offense ). Here is the Defensive Grades.
Linebackers: C
Inside linebacker Trenton Simpson recorded five tackles, one quarterback hit, and half a sack during the game. In a critical moment, he deflected a pass from Mahomes in the closing minutes by jumping at just the right moment, giving the Ravens an opportunity to secure a victory. Roquan Smith, another inside linebacker, redeemed himself after committing a 15-yard horse-collar penalty by making an interception and leading his team with seven tackles. Outside linebacker Odafe Oweh delivered a promising performance, contributing four tackles and one quarterback hit. Meanwhile, David Ojabo, also playing outside linebacker, added his own sack to the team’s tally. However, the unit faced challenges with pass coverage and must improve on finishing their sack attempts. Lastly, Zach Orr has a Trenton Simpson and Malik Harrison issue that has to be solved because Malik Harrison looked lost againg the speed of the Chiefs. Trenton Simpson speed and instincts were needed more against the Chiefs speed.
Defensive Line: B+
The Ravens restricted Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco to just 45 yards on 15 attempts. Nnamdi Madubuike contributed with a half-sack and displayed significant strength in the interior. Nose tackle Michael Pierce recorded four tackles and applied pressure on quarterback Patrick Mahomes several times. Additionally, defensive end Travis Jones made two tackles.
Cornerbacks: C
Despite a sluggish beginning, Mahomes finished the game with 291 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception, earning a 101.9 rating. Safety Marcus Williams performed well with six tackles, but he also made a crucial mistake with a penalty. Cornerback Brandon Stephens played effectively in pass coverage and contributed with four tackles. Safety Kyle Hamilton effectively contained tight end Travis Kelce, limiting him to just three receptions for 34 yards. On the other hand, Marlon Humphrey made a costly mistake by leaving Xavier Worthy open for a 35-yard touchdown due to a misjudgment of defensive support. Just one message from Ravens fans to Zach Orr. Please give more playing time to Nate Wiggins
