Reports from the Combine over the past few days had linked Washington and Deebo Samuel, and now Adam Schefter is reporting that the Commanders are sending a 5th-round pick to the 49ers for the all-purpose wide receiver.
The first 2025 off-season NFL trade: San Francisco has agreed to send standout wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick, sources tell ESPN.
Like any trade agreed to now, it cannot be processed until the new league year begins…

The trade cannot be processed until the start of the new league year at 4pm ET on March 12th.
Assuming that the Commanders are trading their 2025 pick, the loss of the 5th rounder will leave the team with 6 total picks. Per tankathon:

The 5th round pick would have been #148, acquired from New Orleans as part of the Marshon Lattimore deal executed at the trade deadline last season. Washington’s original 5th round pick, #166, was traded to the Eagles as part of the Jahan Dotson trade prior to the start of the 2024 season.
By adding Deebo Samuel, Washington is attempting to bolster the NFL’s 5th-ranked scoring offense in 2024. Samuel is a multi-faceted offensive weapon who has nearly 4,800 career receiving yards, more than 1,100 career rushing yards, and 42 career touchdowns.
Samuel has spent his entire 6-year career with the 49ers.

Deebo is in the final year of his contract with San Francisco, but with 4 void years, fully loaded with cap charges, it is an expensive deal for the Niners according to Over the Cap:

ESPN reports that San Francisco will absorb a $31,550,012 dead money hit on this year’s salary cap. Samuel, who has one year remaining on his contract, will count $17.5 million on Washington’s salary cap comprising his $1.17m base salary and an option payment due on March 22nd.
Over the Cap offers additional details about the cap implications for the Commanders:
Samuel technically has an option in his contract that is due in mid March but my assumption is the 49ers will either renounce the option or rework his contract prior to the trade to remove it to avoid having to take on the proration from the option as dead money this year.
If the option is not utilized Samuel’s cap number for Washington will be $17.55 million. If the option is included then his cap charge will only be $5.206 million this year and the remaining $12.344 will be put into void years starting in 2026. Given that the Commanders are expected to have over $80 million in cap room it would make sense to just take the hit now.
There has been no reporting yet on whether the Commanders will extend his contract beyond 2025.
Dianna Russini reports that Washington was attempting to include Jonathan Allen in the trade, but that didn’t work out.
The Commanders and 49ers discussed a potential trade involving Jonathan Allen and Deebo Samuel, sources tell me and @MikeSilver.
