Player Overview
In high school, Shavon Revel, Jr. was not only a talented defensive back but a prolific receiver. Along with excelling on the football field, he lettered in track and field as a sprinter, long jumper, and high jumper. He was a three-star prospect that attended Louisberg College for two years. After impressing the East Carolina staff at a camp by running a 4.4 40-yard dash and posting an 11’ broad jump, they took a chance on him in 2022. That season, he saw action in nine games for the Pirates, mostly on special teams.
2023 would be Revel, Jr.’s breakout year. He earned Second-Team All-AAC honors after 54 total tackles, four TFLs, a sack, an interception, a fumble return for a touchdown, 13 PBUs, and two blocked field goals. Many had Revel, Jr. pegged for a first round selection in the NFL draft as he looked to build on this performance in 2024, but a torn ACL ended his season early.
Strengths
- Plus size and length for the position (32.5” arms, almost 80” wingspan)
- Ideal athletic profile
- In man coverage, shows quick feet and fluid hips to stay in phase with receivers
- Understanding, awareness, and feel in zone coverage is impressive
- No hesitation in run support and is a solid tackler
- Multiple blocked kicks add special teams value
Weaknesses
- Can be late reacting to quicker receivers, especially on in-breaking routes
- Has to be more consistent turning his head and locating the ball on downfield routes
- Not a lot of reps where he uses a punch to disrupt receivers in press coverage
- Significant injury; recovering from torn ACL

How He Fits on the Commanders
The Commanders’ cornerback group was a work in progress throughout the season. Although Mikey Sainristil was a rookie standout, his play along with Benjamin St-Juste, Noah Igbinoghene, and Michael Davis led Adam Peters to trade for an injured Marshon Lattimore midseason. While he helped, he also had his struggles against star receivers like Mike Evans and A.J. Brown. St-Juste, Igbinoghene, and Davis will be free agents, and the Commanders must find talent this offseason to improve this group.
Although he is coming off an injury, Shavon Revel, Jr. is being regarded as a Day 1 or early Day 2 pick. He has size and athleticism, makes plays on the ball, and does his part in the run game. For a team that runs a lot of zone coverages or plays a lot of off-man coverage, Revel, Jr. would be an excellent fit. Joe Whitt, Jr. has run a lot of zone, but likes to vary coverages depending on opposing offenses. Revel, Jr. needs to improve his skills in man coverage, but if the Commanders believe he can, and the medical evaluation is positive, they may see him as a fit for their defense.
