Don’t let the Tigers get hot. The Towson Tigers have won their 3rd game on the year and 2nd in a row. The Tigers outlasted the Norfolk State Spartans by a score of 28-23 this past Saturday. The Tigers now have some momentum going after struggling during the first few weeks of the season.
Towson got the scoring started early with a touchdown run from Devin Matthews. This made it a 7-0 game after 1. The Spartans would respond with a 58 yard touchdown run from Kevon King to make it 7-7. Norfolk would add a field goal from Gradin Wilcox to make it 10-7. Sean Brown gave the Tigers the lead back with a 14-10 lead. Vinson Berry threw a 43 yard touchdown pass to Elyjah Mitchell to put the Spartans back out front 16-14. Sean Brown then threw 2 touchdown passes: 1 to Jaceon Doss and 1 to Carter Runyon for 8 and 19 yards respectively. Brown’s passing ability has really been a big factor to the Tigers play lately. Kevon King added his 2nd rushing touchdown on the day to cap the scoring at 28-23.
Sean Brown had an up and down day for the Tigers. 3 touchdown passes and 306 yards on 25 completions. However, he did throw 3 INT’s. Normally you struggle to win those games, but it ended up not costing them the game. Norfolk State’s QB Vinson Berry, threw for 221 yards and a touchdown on 16 completions.
Tyrell Greene Jr helped pace the running backs with 63 yards on 17 carries. Devin Matthews punched in a touchdown and had 46 yards on the day. Kevon King had a huge day for the Spartans as he had 96 yards rushing on 15 attempts and 2 touchdowns.
Sean Brown spread the ball around to his receivers a good bit today. John Dunmore, Jaceon Doss and Carter Runyon all had touchdown receptions on the day and all had at least 5 catches. Elyjah Mitchell and Tavian Morris did a large majority of the heavy lifting for the passing game. Both had 6 catches while Mitchell went for 105 and a touchdown. Morris ended the day with 90 yards.
Defensively, John Gioia lead the Tigers with 8 total tackles. Kaden White had a TFL. The Tigers didn’t force any turnovers. The Spartans defense was very active on the day. AJ Richardson had a monster day with 18 total tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss. He added an INT and 2 sacks on top of that. Jayden Smith had 2 INT’s and was a ballhawk for them all day long. The Tigers were lucky to get out of that one with a win.
The Tigers return home for a Saturday afternoon tilt with the Stony Brook Seawolves. This game is also Towson’s homecoming. Always a great game to attend and see all your friends. The Seawolves have had a solid season so far with a 4-2 record. They had a 4 game winning streak that ended in a blowout loss to Villanova.
The Seawolves have used 2 quarterbacks this season: Malachi Marshall and Tyler Knoop. Knoop started the last game against Villanova so there is a possibility he starts on Saturday. Knoop has played in 3 games for Stony Brook and has thrown for 278 yards 1 touchdown and 2 INT’s
The run game features Roland Dempster who has a whopping 12 touchdowns on the season so far. He has 700 yards on 133 attempts and 12 touchdowns all on the ground. He can get involved in the passing game. Johnny Martin and Brandon Boria give the Seawolves some depth in the backfield.
The passing game has not been the strong point of their of their offense. RJ Lamarre and Cole Bunicci are some guys to look out for in the passing game.
Their defense has a number of playmakers. Anthony Ferrelli leads their team in total tackles and will look to get in the backfield. Chayce Chalmers has also been playing extremely well and has added a couple of sacks. Rudy Silvera has 7 pass breakups and 2 INT’s on the year so far.
Towson has another chance to get a win over a team with a winning record. They will need to play a clean game in order to get the win in this one. They cannot afford to turn the ball over like they did against Norfolk State. GO TIGERS
