College football is truly a magnificent sport. You can get absolutely slapped around one week and then hold one of the best offenses in your conference to 14 points. All while on the way to your 4th win on the year and be at .500. The Tigers bounced back in a big way this past weekend with a big victory over the Monmouth Hawks. It was a total team effort on all 3 fronts in order to get the job done.
Sean Brown bounced back in a big way as he threw for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns. Devin Matthews continues to get the run game churning as he ran for 75 yards on 15 carries. Tyrell Green hit pay dirt as he cashed in a touchdown on 11 Carrie’s for 41 yards. Jaceon Doss led the team in reception with 8 for 65 yards. Carter Runyon had 6 catches for 39 yards but also caught both Sean Brown passing touchdowns.
The Tigers defense was very active and held the Hawks to just 14 points and 386 total yards. Xavier Terry had the most tackles on the day with 9 and an INT. Juree Dunbar, Daniel Raymond and Nchabanu Fortaboh combined for 4 sacks. The Tigers defense forced 2 fumbles and recovered 1.
Monmouth QB Derek Robertson threw for 350 yards on 28 completions but only threw 1 touchdown and an INT. The Hawks run game struggled to get going and finished with just 81 yards on the day. Rodney Nelson led the team with 9 carries for 37 yards. Stone Ntoh scored the teams only rushing touchdown on the day but posted 6 carries for 28 yards.
The Hawks found success through the air as they finished 308 yards receiving. Gavin Nelson had a huge day with 9 catches for 133 yards and a score. Defensively they had 1 big play on the day, a sack by Damie McCrary. Justin Bennin had a big day with 14 total tackles.
The Tigers now look to take the next step and continue to build on wins. Their next opponent is another ranked team and a good one at that. The Tigers travel to Richmond Virginia to take on the Richmond Spiders. After an 0-2 start the Spiders have rattled off 6 straight wins. This also marks their homecoming, so a win would be huge for the Tigers but will also be difficult.
The Quarterback for the Spiders is Sophomore and Clemmons, NC native Caden Coleman. It was initially Kyle Wickersham, but some early season struggles have prompted them to turn to Coleman. Coleman has started the past 5 games for Richmond and has really helped the team reach their potential offensively. Despite not having the gaudy stats, he’s really played well for them. He’s thrown for 1,143 yards and 7 touchdowns to 3 INT’s on the year. Last week at Bryant he broke out with 278 passing yards and went 15-16 with 4 passing touchdowns.
Zach Palmer-Smith is their main runningback with 829 yards on 141 attempts and 9 touchdowns. They also feature Andrew King and Aziz Foster-Powell in the backfield. Through the air, Nick DeGennaro, Landon Ellis, Jerry Garcia Jr and Ja’Vion Griffin are all primed to make big plays and will look to attack Towson’s secondary.
Defensively, Carter Glassmyer is by far their best player. An FCS freshman All-American and a conference defensive rookie of the year is a pretty good start. He currently leads the team with 49 tackles, 6 TFL and 2 sacks. He also has a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Wayne Galloway is another guy to watch: 44 total tackles, 3 sacks and couple pass breakups. Quantraill Morris-Walker and Jabril Hayes will look to take the ball away and have 3 INT’s combined.
Not many games left in the season so each game means much more now. The Tigers will look to pick up win 5 and keep the momentum going. Kickoff from Richmond is scheduled for 2. GO TIGERS!
