It was a dream season for the Washington Commanders. Washington found its franchise quarterback, won 12 games and made it to the NFC championship game for the first time since 1991.
That’s not to say the Commanders didn’t face some adversity, including a three-game losing streak midway through the season that had some questioning if their outstanding start was a fluke.
Washington, like other NFL teams, also had issues with officiating. The most glaring example was in Week 15 at New Orleans when the officials inexplicably stopped the clock for close to four seconds, allowing the Saints to get off one more play before the end of the game. Fortunately for the Commanders, the pass fell incomplete and didn’t impact the game’s outcome.
Speaking of officiating, players can sometimes not be penalized during the game but receive a hefty fine the following week. It happened to linebacker Frankie Luvu. But where did the Commanders rank among the teams being fined the most?
According to the Action Network, Washington finished 17th in fines, losing $248,813 in fines last season. Who was first? The Houston Texans, who, incredibly, were fined over $3 million. No other team was fined over $903K (Los Angeles Chargers).
Luvu was Washington’s most fined player ($16,883 each) for roughing the passer and a hip drop tackle and another $11K for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
