After two first-round playoff sweeps in a row, it was time to face the music for the Washington Mystics. Many questions were going into the offseason with “giving everyone some space” general manager Mike Thibault in the exit interview. The offseason saw many changes. Natasha Cloud departing for free agency signing with the Phoenix Mercury. The shocking part of the offseason was Elena Della Donne deciding to not play this season.
The Mystics entered a period of uncertainty but at the same high optimism. Awarded the sixth overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft (selecting Aaliyah Edwards). The Mystics hit the ground running. Bringing back 2014 first-round draft pick Stefanie Dolson on a one-year deal. But also bringing in players with high motors and high potential to make a name and impress this coaching staff.
Free Agency:
Departure: Elena Della Donne, Natasha Cloud, and Tianna Hawkins.
Additions: Didi Richards, Stefanie Dolson, Julie Vanloo, Karlie Samuelson, Emily Engslter, Jade Milboune.
When you look at the roster there are many questions but the biggest one that sticks out is…..point guard. The Mystics are putting their trust in Brittney Sykes with the responsibility but as well look at the roster. The Mystics do have some ball handlers such as Ariel Atkins, Shakira Austin, Julie Vanloo, and even Myisha Hines-Allen. Yes, the Mystics had a chance to address this position but it is not a true area of concern for the team. But the question is the offense. I would expect the defense to finish in the top five.
But realistically this team has enough pieces to compete but at the same time, there will be struggles. But also knowing looking at the future for the team we do not know what the Mystics or the league in 2025, and so forth. The Mystics have two first-round picks, and for now focus on the upcoming season.
The remaining questions that I have for this Mystics season.
- Will Myisha Hines-Allen have the breakout season we’ve been expecting?
- What is the identity of this offense?
- Are the roles clearly defined?
- Can this roster be an example of Cardiac Kids?
The Mystics will not be tanking please tell some of the vets on this team to their face. I predicted the Mystics will finish the season with between 15 & 17 wins this season.
