D.C. United has been busy this offseason shaking up their culture from top to bottom. They fired their general manager and on the player front they acquired a 29 year old defender and Ireland International star Derrick Williams. He comes from the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Black and Red sent $180K as part of the transaction.

“We’re focused on strengthening our backline this offseason and the acquisition of Derrick, a left-footed center back, is the first step of that process,” said Dave Kasper, President of Soccer Operations. “He’s a well-seasoned professional with experience at the highest-levels of our sport and understands Major League Soccer. He’s an exciting addition for us and we look forward to welcoming him into the fold and into Wayne Rooney’s system.”
Williams joined the Los Angeles Galaxy ahead of the 2021 Major League Soccer season and spent two years with the club. During his time at the Galaxy, Williams appeared in 51 matches, including 46 starts across all competitions, and logged four assists. In the 2022 season, Williams appeared 26 times, including 24 starts for the Galaxy and tallied one assist.
The Hamburg, Germany native began his professional career with Aston Villa in 2011 where he spent two years before moving to Bristol City (2013-2016) and then to Blackburn Rovers (2016-2021). He has made over 250 combined appearances in England’s League One and the EFL Championship during his professional career. Williams has also appeared in the Premier League during his time with Aston Villa.
On the international stage, Williams has appeared three times for Ireland and started twice, his first cap came on May 28, 2018 in an international friendly against France.
